Los Angeles, CA voters passed a campaign-finance system in 1990 that allowed municipal tax payer dollars to be used to match campaign donations to Mayoral and City Council candidates dollar for dollar. The City Council then expanded the program into its current super match form in which each dollar donated to qualified candidates is then matched by city tax payer funds 6:1.

Current L.A. Mayor Karen Bass referred to the super match system while fundraising for her mayoral re-election bid.
