Ed Vitagliano: It's first-time caller day on Trivia Friday. The number to call with your question or your answer to a question is 888-589-8840. That's 888-589-8840 if you have never been on the air with us before.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, so first-time callers only. We have a mystery question. If you happen to land on it and answer it correctly, you'll hear this sound.
Ed Vitagliano: He hit the wrong part. Ah, the beloved rim shot.
Ed Vitagliano: Welcome to Trivia Friday. I'm Ed Vitagliano, sitting in for Tim Wildmon this week. Last day of the week. Tim will be back in the captain's chair on Monday. Joining me in the studio is JJ Jasper. Good morning, JJ.
JJ Jasper: Good morning. Great to be here.
Ed Vitagliano: Why do people who live in Greece hate waking up at dawn?
JJ Jasper: Because dawn is tough on Greece. That's all I've got. It's Friday. More people are thinking about football than they are Greece and dawn.
Ed Vitagliano: That's all you've got?
Jonathan Coker: No.
Ed Vitagliano: That's all he has?
Jonathan Coker: That is not all he has.
Jonathan Coker: Listen, I'm confused when somebody says, “You're sitting right here in front of us and you say you're sitting in for Tim,” and then Jonathan is sitting in for you. That confused me. Why aren't you sitting in for Tim and letting Jonathan sit in for you?
Ed Vitagliano: Well, that is an excellent point. I didn't fill in for Tim all week. Ed did.
Jonathan Coker: I'm only here today.
JJ Jasper: Clearly, Ed is filling in for Ed.
Ed Vitagliano: You guys are teasing me. My wife says I overthink things, but I think this one's pretty clear.
Jonathan Coker: I think this is underthinking it.
Ed Vitagliano: But hey, listen, folks, it's Trivia Friday. It is first-time callers.
Ed Vitagliano: Before we get to the housekeeping that we normally do to set up the show, JJ, we have Share-a-thon coming up. Tell our listeners about the listener stories we like to remind folks about with Share-a-thon in the near future.
JJ Jasper: Share-a-thon is next month, the heart of October is almost here. One of my favorite parts of Share-a-thon is hearing from you: salesmen, farmers, truck drivers, moms, dads, boys, and girls. We're gathering listener stories.
JJ Jasper: Here's what we're looking for: How has God used AFR in your life? You can call right now at 877-876-8893. If you've been inspired, encouraged, or blessed in any way, please help us with this. Don't be shy. Call 877-876-8893. We'll record these, and many or most of them will be used during our fall marathon.
JJ Jasper: Let me give you the number one more time if you want to grab a pen or put it in your phone: 877-876-8893.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, so it is first-time callers here on Trivia Friday. If you have never been on the show with us, maybe you tried but couldn't get through, today could be your day. Jonathan, what is the number to call if people want to get on the show?
Jonathan Coker: If you want to call in, the phone number is 888-589-8840.
Ed Vitagliano: Wow, that was slow enough.
Jonathan Coker: That was slow.
Ed Vitagliano: Go ahead and give that again.
Jonathan Coker: It is 888-589-8840.
Ed Vitagliano: That's the number to call if you would like to get on Today's Issues. We're going to have three questions each. You're going to have nine total questions, and I didn't even use a calculator to come up with that number.
Ed Vitagliano: One of those nine original questions, JJ, is special. What's the deal with it?
JJ Jasper: The mystery question. You don't know which one it is, hence the mystery. If you land on it and answer it correctly, you'll hear this sound.
JJ Jasper: Ah, the beloved cowbell. That means you're going to win yourself a really nice, brand-new-design Learning University T-shirt. You'll love this. It's athletic gray, and it has a seal like you would see on an Ivy League university. It's our third design of the Learning University T-shirt.
Ed Vitagliano: If you land on that mystery question and answer it correctly, you're going to win yourself a nice T-shirt. Like you say, JJ, folks wake up on a Friday with no idea they're going to win something. Maybe somebody will be the one who wins it.
Ed Vitagliano: By the way, if you want to buy one of those, and JJ mentioned that it looks like you might get something from an Ivy League school, you can go to resources.afa.net. Take a look at it, and maybe buy one.
Ed Vitagliano: We are approaching Christmas, folks. You don't have to go to Hobby Lobby to get all your stocking stuffers. You can put that in a stocking and give it to somebody who's a fan of the show. Go to resources.afa.net.
JJ Jasper: If you don't believe Christmas is right around the corner, stop by Cracker Barrel and you'll see for sure that it is upon us.
Ed Vitagliano: Seriously, order this and you'll get it in time. In a few weeks you'll get it in time to wrap it up.
JJ Jasper: Somebody is a real fan of Learning University, and they're out there. I spoke at a banquet on Tuesday, and so many people came up and said how much they love Learning University. This would be a wonderful stocking stuffer. You want to get this before you forget about it, and you're just a couple of weeks away from Christmas.
Ed Vitagliano: Then you have the anxiety of hoping it comes in on time.
JJ Jasper: Shop early for us.
Ed Vitagliano: Shop early. That's what we all do, right, guys?
Jonathan Coker: Absolutely.
Ed Vitagliano: You know, I've got a one-liner or a joke for every single thing. Last year, right around Christmas, I saw this meme. It said, “Folks, stop looking out your window for the UPS truck or whatever. That thing you ordered for Christmas is in the Lord's hands now.” That was so funny because everybody could relate.
Ed Vitagliano: The only other housekeeping rule we want to let you know about is that callers must be 11 years old or older to be on the show with us. We don't have a top number. You can be 123 if you're still spry and want to get on the show, but you have to be 11 years old or older.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, guys, I think that's what we have. Since I'm actually sitting in for myself, I'll go first, then JJ, and Jonathan, since you're sitting in for Tim, you'll bring up the rear.
Jonathan Coker: Thank you for clarifying.
Ed Vitagliano: Here are my three questions. This first one is difficult. Most of you are going to have to look this up if you're going to get the right answer, but I like throwing out some hard questions periodically. Most of us know that an MP3 file is a digital audio file, but what does the MP stand for?
Ed Vitagliano: My second question: Yesterday was Constitution Day. To preserve the Constitution, and I'm talking about the document, it is kept under special glass filled with what type of gas? Is it oxygen, nitrogen, argon, or helium?
JJ Jasper: I put argon in my truck tires, and it helps with the gas mileage. It rolls on down the road a little bit better. But I have to keep it anchored in my driveway to keep it from floating off on the weekends.
Jonathan Coker: I thought you could say something about those commercials when I was growing up. They encouraged you to take a bubble bath, and it was “Calgon, take me away.”
JJ Jasper: That's exactly right. Calgon, take me away.
Ed Vitagliano: My last question is true or false: The shortest war in history lasted 38 minutes. Is that true or false?
JJ Jasper: There's actually a shorter war than that one. It's when the wife asks the husband, “Does this dress make me look fat?” That one didn't go well. I'd call that nearly a world war, World War III, right there in the kitchen. But it is over in a hurry.
Ed Vitagliano: Here's what I've got. First question from the Bible, actually an easy question: Name Daniel's three friends who were thrown into the fiery furnace.
Ed Vitagliano: Second question: What is the common alloy comprised of copper and zinc? Let me ask it a little easier. If you blend copper and zinc, what metal do you have? It is very, very common.
Ed Vitagliano: Third question, true or false: Montpelier, Vermont, is the only U.S. capital city that doesn't have a McDonald's. Is that true or false?
JJ Jasper: When I was growing up in New Hampshire, right next door, we thought people in Vermont were the weirdest folks on earth. If this question is true, it only goes to prove it.
Jonathan Coker: What kind of weirdos do you have to be not to have a McDonald's?
Ed Vitagliano: All right, Jonathan.
Jonathan Coker: Before I ask my questions, I have something personal. I'll make it fast. Wesley Wildmon, who does this show Monday through Thursday, received an email a couple of weeks ago from a guy in Kansas who loves that Wesley talks about the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He actually invited Wesley to go hunting up there. I don't know if that's going to work out or not, but this guy said, “I just imagine that you're the only guy in the office who hunts and fishes.”
Jonathan Coker: So I'm here to say, if anybody's listening out there and wants to invite Jonathan Coker hunting or fishing, there you go. I'm an avid hunter and fisherman, and so is Brent Creeley, our producer of this program.
JJ Jasper: I go hunting on occasion.
Jonathan Coker: No, no, no. Barely.
JJ Jasper: I may be the only one in the office who does not hunt.
Jonathan Coker: Jonathan takes leather from a deer he's killed and makes sheaths to hold the knife he made. I've got a homemade knife that he made, and he goes hunting with black powder.
JJ Jasper: He eats, sleeps, and drinks hunting.
Jonathan Coker: I don't waste anything.
Ed Vitagliano: He goes hunting with black powder?
Jonathan Coker: Yes. It's my favorite time of the year.
Ed Vitagliano: All seriousness, I did want to say I'm not expecting anybody to invite me out. I'm just being funny. But Wesley Wildmon is not the only person. If you ever go by Jonathan's office, you could get impaled by one of the deer trophies he's got everywhere.
Ed Vitagliano: Before you get to your questions, Jonathan, did I hear JJ say you made a homemade knife for him?
Jonathan Coker: Yes. That was a long time ago.
JJ Jasper: Long time ago.
Jonathan Coker: He's only made a few.
Ed Vitagliano: If somebody wants to go to eBay and start the bidding, maybe I should get one.
JJ Jasper: I want to know why I have not gotten the homemade knife. Brandon, have you gotten a homemade knife from him?
Jonathan Coker: You haven't either?
JJ Jasper: Honestly, I was a little nervous about you cutting yourself.
Ed Vitagliano: If you're not careful.
JJ Jasper: I did cut myself with a pocketknife when I was a kid.
Jonathan Coker: See? I'm looking out for your safety.
JJ Jasper: Is that it?
Jonathan Coker: That's exactly it.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, go ahead.
Jonathan Coker: Here are my three questions. Number one: In the 1965 film The Greatest Story Ever Told, there was a star-studded cast. What actor played the Roman soldier who said, “Truly this man was the Son of God”? That was the only line he had in the movie. Everybody knows who this is. I want to know the actor's name.
Jonathan Coker: Question two: The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. What was its nickname?
Jonathan Coker: Question three is a shout-out to my oldest son, Presley, who is a John Deere mechanic. This is a niche John Deere question. Some of you are going to know it, and some of you aren't. The John Deere Company produced a tractor in the 1960s and 1970s that is considered the most popular and iconic tractor in American agricultural history. What was the model of that tractor?
Ed Vitagliano: A lot of people know that, and a lot of people don't. All right, Jonathan, take us to the phones.
Jonathan Coker: We're going to go to the phones. First we're going to go to Texas, where Terry is calling. Terry, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Terry: Hello.
Jonathan Coker: Howdy, Terry. Can you hear us?
Terry: Yes. I want to answer the question about the three friends, and I have a question.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, here we go, right out of the Bible. Thank you for getting in the Word and allowing the Word to get in you. Terry, name Daniel's three friends who were thrown into the fiery furnace.
Terry: I learned it in vacation Bible school a million years ago. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Ed Vitagliano: Nicely done.
JJ Jasper: I think the Kentucky version of that is “Your shack, my shack, and away we go.”
Ed Vitagliano: That's a hillbilly translation.
Ed Vitagliano: What a powerful testimony when they said to the king, “We know God is well able to save us from this, but even if He doesn't, we're going to be okay.” There's a whole story there about their faith, not bowing down and worshiping the golden statue of King Nebuchadnezzar.
JJ Jasper: Is that from The Message Bible, “Your shack, my shack, and away we go”?
Ed Vitagliano: Hey, Terry, what's your question for us?
Terry: My question is, on the show Columbo, what was the lieutenant's first name?
Ed Vitagliano: This is a great question.
JJ Jasper: That's not like “Book 'em, Danno.”
Jonathan Coker: Book 'em, Danno.
JJ Jasper: He had the trench coat and the cigar and was always playing dumb.
Ed Vitagliano: We think his first name was never mentioned.
Jonathan Coker: I think this is kind of a trick question.
Ed Vitagliano: Terry, we're going to say, and these guys can back me up, that I don't think they ever said it.
Terry: It may have been given in one episode.
Ed Vitagliano: Terry, help us out. This is a great question, by the way. I loved that show.
Terry: However, the fact is, it was never mentioned. It was written on a piece of paper. His first name was Frank.
Ed Vitagliano: Frank, but it was never mentioned?
Terry: It was written on a piece of paper, perhaps by the writers or director, or maybe it was on a script. It appeared in one of the shows, but if you didn't see it and read it, you never knew.
JJ Jasper: Frank Columbo. That's actually a pretty cool name.
Ed Vitagliano: Hey, Terry, what's your question for us?
Terry: That was it.
Ed Vitagliano: That's right, because you answered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Jonathan Coker: It's not easy getting old.
Ed Vitagliano: No, no, it's not. Thank you, Terry.
Jonathan Coker: Next we're going to go to Louisiana, where Gretchen is on the line. Gretchen, welcome to Trivia Friday. Are you going to watch any football this weekend?
Gretchen: I leave that up to my husband. I'm not really a big football fan.
Jonathan Coker: I'm guessing he's going to be watching because your new coach is the old coach, and you've got number seven LSU playing number eight Ole Miss. When that coach left, he took some players and staff, so it's going to be a serious rivalry tomorrow night in Oxford, Mississippi. You don't have to be a fan of football to watch that game. You just have to be a fan of chaos.
Ed Vitagliano: Hey, you got far away from the phone all of a sudden.
Gretchen: I can hear you now.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, Gretchen. Do you want to ask, answer, or do both?
Gretchen: The first caller answered the Daniel question, so I'm going to go for the USS Constitution question.
Jonathan Coker: The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. What was its nickname?
Gretchen: I'm going to guess “Old Ironsides.”
Ed Vitagliano: That's right. You're like me. You pulled that from sixth-grade social studies.
Ed Vitagliano: I'll actually be on Old Ironsides next week. I'm going on the Spiritual Heritage Tour to Boston with Wesley, Walker Wildmon, Stephen McDowell, and Tim Barton, along with a host of listeners. I'm looking forward to it. We'll see the Freedom Trail, Lexington, Concord, and all of that.
JJ Jasper: My family and I did that trip in July. We went to Boston, did the Freedom Trail, and saw the Constitution. It's really great.
Ed Vitagliano: Are you allowed to go onboard the ship?
JJ Jasper: Yes.
Ed Vitagliano: Because it's a replica, right?
JJ Jasper: Yes.
Ed Vitagliano: Not only are you allowed to go onboard, but at one point there's a rail where you lean back as far as you can and kiss this big stone.
JJ Jasper: You might be confusing places. That's Plymouth Rock.
Ed Vitagliano: No, the Barney Stone.
Jonathan Coker: You're getting your chaos mixed up.
Ed Vitagliano: By the way, have you been to Plymouth Rock?
Jonathan Coker: No, I haven't.
JJ Jasper: It's a big disappointment.
Ed Vitagliano: I was expecting something huge.
JJ Jasper: I always thought it was just a big boulder.
Ed Vitagliano: It's not.
Gretchen: I came up with this at the last minute. Years ago, the Navajo tribes used dolls to teach their children the ways of their religion. What were those dolls called?
Ed Vitagliano: I knew this at one time. I know it inspired a musical. “Hello, Dolly.”
JJ Jasper: I don't want to confuse our listeners. Let's get back to what they were called.
Ed Vitagliano: I can see them. Do you guys have a guess?
Jonathan Coker: They were made out of corn husk and tied into their religion.
Ed Vitagliano: I want to say Hopi dolls. I'm not sure where that's rattling around in my brain.
JJ Jasper: They're called Kachina dolls.
Ed Vitagliano: Kachina, yes. They're all over the Southwest. You can buy them at convenience stores.
Jonathan Coker: I don't know where I got Hopi dolls, but I hope Ole Miss will win.
Ed Vitagliano: Nice trivia. Thank you so much for listening to AFR and being a first-time caller. Have yourself a great weekend, Gretchen.
Gretchen: Thank you.
Ed Vitagliano: Before we go to break, I want to mention that we have some guests visiting us, Robert and Anita Squirrel. Unusual name, but it is their 22nd anniversary. They're from Moscow, Tennessee, and they're nearby during our campus tour.
Jonathan Coker: They're taking a tour.
Ed Vitagliano: We wanted to give them a shout-out. If you want to come by and visit, go to AFA.net. At the top, where the drop-down menus are, there's one that says “More.” That menu says “Visits.” Click on that, fill out a quick form, and let us know you're coming. Hopefully everyone you want to meet will be here, and you're certainly welcome to visit.
JJ Jasper: If you bring a Kachina doll, you get in for free.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, we'll be taking a short break, and we will be right back.
Ed Vitagliano: Welcome back to Trivia Friday. That was the theme song from Bonanza.
Ed Vitagliano: Ed Vitagliano, JJ Jasper, and Jonathan Coker are here, your professors at Learning University. Before the break I mentioned that we had a couple of visitors, Robert and Anita Squirrel. It is their 22nd anniversary. Sometimes I joke around a little bit, but if you come by to visit, we don't mind if you bring gifts, and they did. They brought a bag full of nuts.
Jonathan Coker: I don't know if they were commenting about us or not.
Ed Vitagliano: Somebody with the last name Squirrel brought nuts. These are a few of their favorite things: pistachios and pine nuts.
JJ Jasper: Wow.
Ed Vitagliano: Thank you so much to the really nice people. They just came to visit us. If you come and want to bring gifts, we will do our best to share them around the office.
Jonathan Coker: If you bring a free hunting trip, I'm not sharing that with anybody.
JJ Jasper: No, you're not.
Jonathan Coker: I wish you would with me.
Ed Vitagliano: Where are you going to be, JJ?
JJ Jasper: Let me back up. Tuesday night I spoke at a pregnancy resource center banquet in Greenwood, Mississippi. The pro-life community there is awesome. Our own Joseph Parker is the founder of the pregnancy center. They've got a mobile unit, and it was a wonderful, successful banquet. We exceeded their goal and exceeded the donations from last year. That was a praise report.
JJ Jasper: This coming Thursday, I'm going to be in Mobile, Alabama, at the fairgrounds center for Mission of Hope, a wonderful drug and alcohol recovery ministry. They have a home for women and programs for men. They're doing amazing work. That's this coming Thursday night in Mobile, Alabama, and you're invited. I'd love to meet our listeners there.
Ed Vitagliano: It's a fundraising dinner.
JJ Jasper: Yes.
Ed Vitagliano: Wonderful news. Our listeners are familiar with Pastor Joseph Parker. He has such a heart for people.
Ed Vitagliano: Let's redo our questions. Here are my three original ones. No one's really taken a shot at these.
Ed Vitagliano: First question: Most know an MP3 file is a digital audio file, but what does the MP stand for? That is a difficult question. You may have to look it up, but the answer will pop up immediately.
Ed Vitagliano: Second question: Yesterday was Constitution Day. To preserve the Constitution, and I'm speaking of the document, it is kept under special glass filled with what type of gas? Is it oxygen, nitrogen, argon, or helium?
Ed Vitagliano: Third question: The shortest war in history lasted 38 minutes. Is that true or false?
JJ Jasper: First question: If you blend copper and zinc, what metal do you get? What is the common alloy comprised of copper and zinc?
JJ Jasper: Second question, true or false: Montpelier, Vermont, is the only U.S. capital city that doesn't have a McDonald's.
JJ Jasper: Third question: In dog racing, what is the most popular breed of dog on the track?
Jonathan Coker: Here are my three. Question one: In the 1965 film The Greatest Story Ever Told, what actor played the Roman soldier who said, “Truly this man was the Son of God”?
Jonathan Coker: Second question: The John Deere Company produced a tractor in the 1960s and 1970s. What was the model of that tractor?
Jonathan Coker: Question three: What famous Old West lawman said, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is final,” when talking about gunfights?
Ed Vitagliano: When talking about what?
Jonathan Coker: Gunfights.
JJ Jasper: I planned for cornhole too. If you get serious, with two big wooden boxes and some friends grilling burgers and throwing beanbags, you really want them to count. Accuracy isn't lethal if you throw one over the chain-link fence, but you still want it to go in the hole.
Jonathan Coker: All right, we're going back to the phones. We're going to Arkansas, where Lee is calling. Lee, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Lee: Hey, how's it going?
Jonathan Coker: All right. How are you, sir?
Lee: Pretty well. I want to answer the copper question, I believe, and I have to ask one.
Jonathan Coker: Here's the question: What is the common alloy comprised of copper and zinc? Basically, if you mix copper and zinc together, what metal do you get?
Lee: Is it nickel?
Jonathan Coker: No, but that's a good guess. What's your question for us?
Lee: In the garden, as Eve ate of the fruit, what did Adam say in his heart?
Ed Vitagliano: Is that in the Bible?
Lee: I think it's a joke.
Jonathan Coker: He was thinking, “She's about to eat us out of house and home.”
Lee: That's right.
Ed Vitagliano: What's the answer?
Lee: “My God, this woman is going to be the death of me.”
Jonathan Coker: Hey, listen, Lee, thank you for listening to AFR. Have a great weekend.
Ed Vitagliano: We're going to go next to Oklahoma, where Dennis is calling. Dennis, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Dennis: Hey, how's it going?
Jonathan Coker: We're good. How are you, sir?
Dennis: Doing well myself. Thank you.
Ed Vitagliano: Where do you live in Oklahoma, Dennis?
Dennis: Oklahoma City.
Ed Vitagliano: Do you want to ask, answer, or do both?
Dennis: I want to answer the question about the Constitution. I know who Daniel's three friends were, and I knew that Jesus showed up. I'm an Air Force man, but I knew that the Constitution was called Old Ironsides, so I want to go with what the Constitution is stored in.
Ed Vitagliano: To preserve the Constitution, talking about the document, it is kept under special glass filled with what type of gas? Oxygen, nitrogen, argon, or helium?
Dennis: Argon.
Ed Vitagliano: Nice. Well done. How did you know that?
Dennis: Argon is a gas used to preserve paperwork.
Ed Vitagliano: So you could preserve anything under that gas if you had a special case where it wouldn't leak out?
Dennis: Yes, it keeps it in pristine condition.
Ed Vitagliano: Excellent. What's your question for us, Dennis?
Dennis: Do you know there's a place in the Bible where God was so angry with the Israelites that He made them eat their bread mixed with human dung?
Ed Vitagliano: I think I saw that. The prophet said, “I've never defiled myself,” and the Lord modified it just a little bit.
JJ Jasper: Is this Isaiah or Ezekiel?
Dennis: I think it was Isaiah. Maybe it was Ezekiel.
Jonathan Coker: Ezekiel, chapter four, verse 12.
Ed Vitagliano: It was not only dangerous being an Old Testament prophet, but you never knew where you were going to wind up or what God was going to have you do to get the point across. Lay on your side, do this or that, or God told Hosea to marry a woman of ill repute to show what Israel had done by walking away from Him. There are a lot of things that we might consider bizarre that happened in the Old Testament.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, we're going to Texas, where Bill is calling. Bill, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Bill: I sounded like I had won the bell or something.
Ed Vitagliano: Where do you live in Texas?
Bill: I'm from Texas, and I want to answer the John Deere question.
Jonathan Coker: The John Deere Company produced a tractor in the 1960s and 1970s that is considered the most popular and iconic in agricultural history. What's the model of the tractor?
Bill: The 4020.
Ed Vitagliano: That's nice.
Jonathan Coker: That's where I've got my money instead of a 401(k). I have a 4020 fund.
Ed Vitagliano: My son is a John Deere mechanic, and he currently has two of those tractors.
Bill: He's a mechanic and says that's the best tractor John Deere ever made.
Ed Vitagliano: Why does he have two tractors? Is he collecting?
Bill: He's 22, lives at home, and isn't married. That's why he has two tractors.
Ed Vitagliano: The best answer ever.
Jonathan Coker: If you know anybody looking for a 4020 tractor, contact Jonathan Coker at AFA.
Ed Vitagliano: What's your question for us?
Bill: I want to ask that JJ recuse himself from answering this.
JJ Jasper: I will.
Bill: How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?
Jonathan Coker: I think I've heard this. It's something like one to change it and 20 to analyze it.
JJ Jasper: I think it's one, but it really has to want to be changed.
Ed Vitagliano: Thank goodness.
Jonathan Coker: Way to go, JJ.
Ed Vitagliano: Have a great weekend, Bill. We hope your team wins. Thank you for listening.
Ed Vitagliano: We're going to Mississippi, where Cody is calling. Cody, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Cody: Hey, I'm here. Sorry.
Jonathan Coker: That's all good. How are you doing today?
Cody: Can you hear me now?
Jonathan Coker: Yes, sir. We can hear you. Are you at work?
Cody: I am. I'm from Iuka.
Jonathan Coker: Are you going to be watching that game tomorrow night?
Cody: I probably will be.
Jonathan Coker: Do you want to ask, answer, or do both?
Cody: I'd like to do both, please.
Jonathan Coker: Which question do you feel confident about?
Cody: Let me do the MP3.
Ed Vitagliano: Most people know that an MP3 file is a digital audio file, but what does the MP stand for?
Cody: Moving Picture Experts Group.
Ed Vitagliano: Yes, you got it right. Moving Picture Experts Group is the organization that created the format, so they kept “Moving Picture” in the name for the digital audio file. That's excellent. Did you have to look that up?
Cody: I had to look that one up.
Ed Vitagliano: That's okay. That's one of the things we appreciate and allow people to do. You did what you were supposed to do to get the correct answer. What's your question for us?
Cody: On The Andy Griffith Show, Goober was introduced with two names. One of them is obvious because he and Gomer are cousins. What was the other name he was introduced with as his last name?
Jonathan Coker: Ask it again so we can wrap our brains around it.
Cody: Gomer Pyle had a cousin, Goober, on The Andy Griffith Show. He was introduced twice. The second time he was introduced with the last name Powell. What was his last name the first time he was introduced?
Ed Vitagliano: Gomer was taking him around, and he was doing the Cary Grant impression and all that.
Jonathan Coker: That's a deep dive. I'm going to go with Smith.
Cody: I should know this, but I can't recall it. It's deep under some boxes where I've got things packed in my brain.
Ed Vitagliano: What's the answer, Cody?
Cody: I came up with this one on my own. I was watching it one day, and he got introduced. I thought his last name was Powell, but he was first introduced as Goober Beasley.
Jonathan Coker: Beasley. Wow.
Cody: He was Miss Beasley's boy.
Ed Vitagliano: That's a great question. Our Andy Griffith fans appreciate that.
Jonathan Coker: My 11-year-old daughter, Tegan, has gotten into Little House on the Prairie. She's binge-watched the whole series three or four times. Then she went to Leave It to Beaver.
Ed Vitagliano: That does my baby-boomer heart good, because all those values are there.
Jonathan Coker: Now she's binge-watching Andy Griffith. By Christmas she's going to be able to give Brother Bert a run for his money.
Ed Vitagliano: That kind of programming is safe for you.
Jonathan Coker: Absolutely.
Ed Vitagliano: Let's reset our questions so maybe we can fit in another question or two before the break. The only one I have left is: The shortest war in history lasted 38 minutes. Is that true or false?
Ed Vitagliano: I'll add these two: What are the prongs on a fork called? And what was Wilt Chamberlain's record for most points in an NBA game? I think that record still stands.
JJ Jasper: Jonathan Coker has hunted prongs on the slopes of North Dakota and probably has one or two of them in his office along with all those trophy bucks.
JJ Jasper: Here's what I've got. If you blend copper and zinc together, what metal do you get? It's very common. We had a guest answer nickel, but that's not right.
JJ Jasper: Second question, true or false: Montpelier, Vermont, is the only U.S. capital city with no McDonald's?
JJ Jasper: Third question: In dog racing, what is the most popular breed of dog on the track? This is a familiar dog. When you hear it, you go, “Of course it is.”
Jonathan Coker: In The Greatest Story Ever Told, what actor played the Roman soldier who said, “Truly this man was the Son of God”?
Jonathan Coker: Second question: What famous Old West lawman said, “Fast is fine, but accuracy is final”?
Jonathan Coker: I'll add one more: What is the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in America?
Ed Vitagliano: Excellent. Let's go back to the phones. We're staying in Mississippi, where Daniel is calling. Daniel, welcome to Trivia Friday.
Daniel: How are you guys?
Jonathan Coker: We're doing great. It's Friday, and we're doing trivia.
Ed Vitagliano: Are you going to watch that game tomorrow night?
Daniel: I hope I get time. I'm actually in school, so now I'm taking school twice with you guys.
Ed Vitagliano: You have a chance to get an A on this pop quiz. Do you want to ask, answer, or do both?
Daniel: I'm going to do both, and I'm going to do the copper and zinc question. Everybody took about four of the answers I knew.
Ed Vitagliano: What is the common alloy comprised of copper and zinc? If you mix copper and zinc together, what metal do you get?
Daniel: My first guess was correct, and I researched it. When you mix them together, it's brass.
Ed Vitagliano: Brass!
Jonathan Coker: Are you kidding me?
Daniel: No.
Ed Vitagliano: Yes, we are, Daniel. We faked you out.
Daniel: I've been listening for at least 10 years. I quit listening about four years ago when my wife walked out, and I went to praise and worship music. But I started listening again three or four days ago, and this is the first time I've ever gotten through. I stayed on hold for 33 minutes.
JJ Jasper: I've got some friends who call these things a little God wink.
Daniel: Amen.
JJ Jasper: He knew what you needed on a Friday. You've gone through some very tough things, and this is just a little something from the Lord to say, “I see you.” It's a little God wink.
Daniel: Amen.
Ed Vitagliano: Stay on the line so we can get your address and your T-shirt size. You woke up on a Friday morning and didn't think you were going to win anything. You won a newly designed Learning University T-shirt.
Jonathan Coker: Now I'm wondering, are you a hunter? I'm thinking about all those casings made of brass.
Daniel: I would love to hunt, but I haven't had the time while raising kids. I'm almost 50 and back in college.
Ed Vitagliano: Good for you.
Daniel: I'm doing drafting and design, and I have a question for you guys. The chemical that helps keep the chlorine in your pool, what is that chemical called? It keeps the chlorine from burning off. Chlorine can burn off within eight to 24 hours after you put it in your pool. If you don't have another chemical in there, it will burn off and go away.
JJ Jasper: I don't know that chemical.
Daniel: It is cyanuric acid.
Ed Vitagliano: Yes, that's right.
Ed Vitagliano: Daniel, I'm going to put you on hold. God bless your work at school and give you the job you need. God bless you in this new season of life. Thanks for not giving up.
Ed Vitagliano: All right, folks, we're going to take a five-minute break for news. When we come back, more of Trivia Friday here on the American Family Radio Network.
Ed Vitagliano fills in for Tim Wildmon alongside JJ Jasper and Jonathan Coker for Trivia Friday, a fun game featuring first-time callers and a mystery question that can win a Learning University T-shirt. The questions cover Daniel's three friends, the gas used to preserve the Constitution, the meaning of MP in MP3, the USS Constitution's nickname, John Deere tractors, brass, classic television, and other general knowledge topics. Callers from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi join the show with their own questions, answers, jokes, and stories. The hour includes friendly banter about hunting, football, old television shows, and a listener's long-awaited chance to get on the air.
