In a brief unsigned opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined the regressive wing of the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, to deny President Trump’s request to freeze $2 billion of USAID spending.
Justice Samuel Alito, joined by Justices Thomas, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh, wrote in dissent that he was “stunned” that the majority ruled in this case that “a single district-court judge who likely lacks jurisdiction has the unchecked power to compel the U.S. Government to pay out (and probably lose forever) 2 billion taxpayer dollars.”
