Kevin Freeman: You know, it's always good to have you. You're my favorite co host, but we have a special guest. In addition to having you as co host, we've got a guest who did not set out to write a theology book, so she set out to survive. And here is the Pirate Money connection. Before we even get into the bank or anything else, the same man who wrote the forward for her book wrote the forward of Pirate Money. And he is our good friend, Nick Vujicic. And I don't think that's a coincidence.
Marnie Freeman: I don't think it's a coincidence. And I love him. When God is writing both stories, he tends to tie the money and the mission together.

Kevin Freeman: And our guest is Betsy Gray, the author of the Life I Didn't Plan and the God who Never Left. What a title.
Marnie Freeman: I know.
Kevin Freeman: She's a shepherd, a clinic director, an artist, a co founder with Nick Vujicic of Pro Life Financial. welcome aboard.
Marnie Freeman: Betsy Gray, welcome.
Betsy Gray: Hi. Hi. Kevan and Marnie, this is just such an honor to be here. Thank you so much for having me.
Marnie Freeman: We love it. We love Betsy. We've known her for a while now, and I mean, she is full of miracles and wisdom.
Kevin Freeman: Every time she comes out to Liberty Hawk, every time we see her at a conference, it lights up. She just lights up. She's so bright as a personality, it lights up the world.
Betsy says becoming a shepherd changed how she heard Jesus
Betsy, start with us in Montana. You have got two bum lambs. Explain what that means. And why did becoming a shepherd change how you hear Jesus from Jon 10?
Betsy Gray: Well, I ended up on a ranch in Montana and we had no animals. We went to church one Sunday and a dear rancher lady asked me if I wanted a couple of bum lambs. And, she explained that when a ewe has three lambs or triplets, they reject one of them. So you have these orphans, they call them bum lambs. And she said you have a Couple Kids, Great4H Project. So I thought, sure. So I end up with these, two bum lambs. And they bottle feed every hour. But Never at the same time. but the word got out really fast that we took orphans. And I literally ended up, with not only lambs, but horses and chickens and geese and cats and dogs. so I have these beautiful little bum lambs. And. And then at the same time, because God is so amazing, I actually, had considered myself a Christian for 20 years. I never went to church. You know, I was a creaser. I went in Christmas and Easter. I've never heard that.
Kevin Freeman: Creaster. All right.
Betsy Gray: And, you know, I never read my Bible either. But if you would ask me if I was a Christian, I would have said absolutely. and so I'm at this new little church and these ladies invite me to a Bible study. And, I'm 40 years old now, and no one had ever invited me to a Bible study in all my years of going to church. And, you know, and I did go more than just on Christmas.
Kevin Freeman: Okay, so let me just get this straight. You're there, you go to church, and somebody at church says, would you take two bum lambs? And you're now a shepherd and you're in Montana.
Marnie Freeman: One of them was Helen, right? Or was that Lucy? And Helen trusted you with her life, literally.
Betsy Gray: So what I was getting at with is that this church I got to know, I moved from religion to. At the same time I got my bum lambs, I moved from religion to a relationship. I actually met Jesus Christ the shepherd. And so at that same time, he starts teaching me about himself through my sheep.
Marnie Freeman: Amazing.
On Mother's day weekend in 2002, your mom is dying in Oregon
Well, then I'm going to switch to. On Mother's day weekend in 2002, you are in Montana, your mom is dying in Bend, Oregon, and a tractor pulls out in front of you. You shout for a police escort, you need help, and one of the police is throwing his leg over a motorcycle. And you are in a panic to try to get to be with your mom.
Kevin Freeman: This sounds like something straight from a movie trailer.
Marnie Freeman: I mean, every. In her book, every thing, every story sounds like a movie story. And it's really impactful.
Kevin Freeman: So tell that.
Betsy Gray: Well, it was so hard because when the doctor called me, he said, you don't have much time. Well, at that time, it was a 10 hour trip. It took two airplanes and it was 10 hours. No matter. That's as fast as you could do it. And my flight took off in an hour, but it took me, more than an hour to get to the airport. So we're driving like mad, and this tractor makes us go even slower because it's blind curves. You can't pass the tractor. So when we finally get on this highway with all these cars, and I did. I screamed, lord, we've got to have a police escort. And literally right then I looked up and a motorcycle cop was on the side of the road getting back on his bike. And we pulled over. I tumbled out of the car, ran up to him, screamed out my mess and how much we needed to escort. He actually let us. He said, follow me. And when he pulled out at, the next intersection, two more police cars pulled out. And then one more motorcycle pulled out. Cars were parting like the Red Sea. And it was the next year after 9 11.
Kevin Freeman: How long had you been a Christian at that point? How long had you really had a relationship?
Betsy Gray: at that point, that was 2002, and I had become relation. I became a Christian knowing Jesus in 1992.
Kevin Freeman: Okay, so you're 10 years in, you've been shepherding lambs, and all of a sudden you find out about your mom and you're like, I gotta get there. And you beg God for police escort. And lo and behold, he provides one.
Marnie Freeman: I mean, all the way up to the door of the airport, which you can't do.
Betsy Gray: It had just been 9 11. So there's all this cement and security, and I'm just going, oh my gosh, there's no way. And not only did we pull right up where we weren't supposed to pull up, but they. There was a cop waiting for me. And then he grabbed my arm and dragged me all the way. We ran across the tarmac right up to the plane.
Marnie Freeman: Oh my God.
Betsy Gray: And we got to the top and turned into the aisle, and the whole plane started applauding. And they had littered. The airline had waited for us.
Marnie Freeman: Amazing. Amazing.
Kevin Freeman: That's God. That is not a normal airline experience.
Marnie Freeman: And that's only one of the. One of the miracles.
We'll talk with Betsy Gray about her new book, The Life I Didn't Plan
In her book. So Nick writes that you still press your neck against the shepherd's leg. So what does that mean or look like on an ordinary Tuesday, when you're pressing your neck? yeah, on the shepherd's leg. So just tell us about that.
Betsy Gray: Well, the most beautiful part of knowing your shepherd as a shepherd, like when he teaches us that in Jon, we read it. And if you haven't had sheep, you don't realize how dependent they truly are. And so the beautiful thing thing is the sheep don't have to know where they're going. They totally depend on the shepherd. So on any given Tuesday or any other day, just having that peace and that knowledge that if you're seeking him with all your heart, his promise is to direct your path. So, you just lean hard.
Kevin Freeman: I've never connected. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will direct your path. Connected that with the shepherd until now, I never connected. That's what sheep have to do.
Marnie Freeman: Well, part of that is that Helen, her sheep, Bum Sheep, was, Bum Lamb, was pressing her neck to follow Betsy. And I think she may talk about that further in the show, but.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, yeah, so. So the whole notion of following God, you have to be right there, right up next to Him, Is that what you're saying?
Marnie Freeman: Yeah.
Betsy Gray: well, when you. Yeah, you need to lean on him, you need to realize that he's there for you.
Marnie Freeman: That's your direction, that's your peace, that's your trust. And it is literally blind faith.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, well, that's the whole book in one picture. The Life I didn't plan and the God who never left. That's a sheep talking to the shepherd.
Marnie Freeman: Right.
Kevin Freeman: Because the sheep doesn't plan their life. And the only way the sheep is in trouble is when it's separated from the shepherd.
Marnie Freeman: Right? Yeah, we need that. We need our shepherd.
Kevin Freeman: So. You've led an incredible life. I've read this book, and you're so full of life. You've got a full life ahead of you. That's the exciting thing about you, Betsy. You've led an incredible life and you've got a full life ahead of you. It's wonderful, just learning about all that you're doing. And it's an amazing book, with a Ford, you know, again, I can't get over it. The Ford is by Nick Vujicic. Same guy that wrote my Ford. A guy born without arms or legs. And he trusts the shepherd in the exact same way. So we've got a whole hour ahead of us of amazing miracle stories talking with Betsy Gray about her new book, but we're also gonna talk about your new venture, Pro Life Financial, and how that fits into this not planning a life. Betsy Gray: I know, I want to.
Marnie Freeman: You named, a cormo bum lamb, Helen, after Helen Keller, which is really appropriate. She learned the ranch by bumping into your leg. So how is that different from the slogan, just have more faith or, yeah, you can explain all that. I love Ellen Keller, and you go for it.
Betsy Gray: Okay, yeah, well, different than that slogan because, faith is everything. and the blind part of this faith was so amazing for me. when I found out Helen was blind, I took her and carried her everywhere. But, you know, they grow pretty fast. So I put her down next to my leg when she was a couple, couple, you know, 24 inches tall, and took her neck and bumped it into my leg as I took a step, and just two or three steps, she caught on and she was able to bump into me. And we navigated the whole ranch that way as she grew up, just so she could bump me a little bit. We went everywhere together. Well, but then, you know, like, everything. She wanted to, immigrate into the, flock when she. When she got. When she grew up. And she even had lambs of her own, you know, until one day, you guys, I heard this screaming. I mean, she was there was bleeding so loud, I thought there was a wolf. I ran to the window, and something had. Had spooked the flock and they had run away. She's in this spinning in this little circle and I run outside and I whistle and she froze and I ran out to her and, and with exaggeration, she usually didn't do it this hard, but she just, I got up next to her and she threw her head against my hip and leaned really hard on me. Oh, she was so relieved her shepherd was there.
Marnie Freeman: That's a, that's so profound. She had. Because you wore her like a scarf when she was young. And as, she grew up, she came into basically her own faith. Leaned into your leg and she could navigate. And then when she didn't, when you weren't there, you came immediately. When you heard trouble, when she, you heard that she was in trouble, you were there. And talk about years later, when you actually had to leave them. You had to leave three sheep and, you know, circumstances of your life, you had to give them back. So you gave her to a rancher and you went to go see your sheep two years later. And what happened?
Betsy Gray: Well, if you wouldn't mind, I just wanted to tell you at that moment of her leaning hard on me, that's when Jesus spoke to me for the first time ever as a 40 year old.
Marnie Freeman: Oh, wow.
Betsy Gray: And that's when he said to me, trust in me with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. And that's when I realized, you guys, I'm the shepherd. Helen is blind. She knows that I'm going to take her where she should go. And that's exactly what Jesus wants us to do. And so that was the profound moment that I wanted to talk about. Then I had to say goodbye to my beautiful sheep. Now they only live to be, you know, 10 or 12, so they were almost, ah, that age. And I had to sell my whole flock to market. But not, not Helen and Lucy and Lisa, my two original ones. So two years later, this rancher agreed. Okay, I'll let them live their life out. Two years went by, never saw them again. But different business took me out there. And at the end of the business I said to, the rancher, so how did my sheep do? Because I figured they were gone. And he said, well, Lucy and Helen are out back. You will see them.
Kevin Freeman: All right, Betsy, we're going to have to take a break. Wow, this is a great story. And you're going to have to hang on till you find out what happened with Helen and Lucy when the shepherd came back to see them. We'll be right back.

Kevin Freeman: Betsy Gray left us on a cliffhanger with her book
Welcome back with your host, Kevan Freeman.
Kevin Freeman: And I'm joined by Marnie Freeman. Marnie and I are talking to one of our favorite people, Betsy Gray, the author of the Life I Didn't Plan and the God who Never Left. And, Betsy, you left us on a cliffhanger. You had to sell your flock. You know, and I'm picturing Marty, I'm picturing sheep Detective a little bit here in the movie that was out there. I'm picturing that a little bit. But you've had to leave your flock, sell them, and then you come back and somebody that you didn't sell them to, that's a new business. And now it's years later, and you're coming back and you're saying, hey, I wonder what happened to. And, it's Helen and Lucy, right? Pick up the story where we left off.
Betsy Gray: And so Helen and Lucy are out back. I run outside, and the rancher points to a hillside. Well, he's got about 75 sheep. All their heads are down. They're all grazing. I couldn't see my two sheep. So just for kicks, I whistled my shepherd whistle. And immediately, only two heads popped up. And then they turned and they ran down that hillside. They had to run all the way across a pasture and over a bridge and through the corral. The whole time, Helen's, you know, little bumping into two to, Lucy. And they get all the way up to me, and I'm rubbing their little heads and I'm calling them by name. And right then, Jesus spoke to me again, and he said, my sheep know my voice, and I know them by name.
Kevin Freeman: Amen.
Betsy Gray: And he was telling me then, betsy, I know your name, and you can hear my voice.
Kevin Freeman: But notice there, the dependence. Sometime we depend on other people who are believers. We depend on the Lord. But to get to you, Lucy needed to help guide Helen to get to you, because Helen was blind, couldn't see. And so when they both heard your voice, they both responded. But we are to bear one another's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ. So there's another biblical. I mean, your book is so filled with biblical truth, but it's applied. And it reminds me of those, amazing books where you've got somebody telling their life story and you see God throughout the book, but not visually. You see him. You just know the hand of God is there. And that's what this book reminds me of.
Marnie Freeman: This book has so many Miracles. It's divided chapter by chapter, miracle by miracle. And it's really impactful. And I have a kinship with her in that we started out rebellious, and God called us. We came to know and hear his voice, and we finally repented of our ways. And I, think one big thing is that we did not know you needed to. When we first came to Christ. And the book talks about this is we did not know we needed to feast on the Word to grow. We did not know we need to put on spirit, spiritual armor. We did not know we entered a spiritual battlefield, and discipleship, hence, is so important. And she didn't have it, and I really didn't have it much. And so, therefore, after receiving Christ, we went off on our own ways and did our own thing.
Kevin Freeman: But this book ministered to you.
Marnie Freeman: Yes, it did, because it showed you
Kevin Freeman: the path back even when you were blind and how you could hear the shepherd's voice and how you could.
Marnie Freeman: He never left. Really.
Kevin Freeman: He never left. And you could depend on another believer who would walk alongside you, because two are better than one, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Betsy, it's a great story. Any other thoughts you want to share from the life that you hadn't planned?
Betsy Gray: Well, the objective of sharing all these stories and my shepherd showed up so miraculously throughout my life, is to encourage and inspire the people that read this book. How wonderful it is to walk with Jesus every day, to spend time with him every single day in his word, you and him, and there's nothing else like it. It'll change your life.
You left Montana for Santa Barbara to lead a pro life clinic
Kevin Freeman: All right, now I want to fast forward from here to another miracle that we'll carry over on the break, which is an amazing story of how God called you in to be pro life into the clinic, into the fundraising associated with all that. There's a whole other miracle story. You're gonna reset, and you're all of a sudden, you're gonna be in Santa Barbara. Isn't that where you were? Santa Barbara?
Betsy Gray: Yes. I left Montana for Santa Barbara.
Kevin Freeman: And in Santa Barbara, you find yourself now leading a pro life clinic. And you're helping people, people deal with life. There's an amazing story that you're going to hear when we come back from the break about how God intersected this woman who cared for a blind lamb with a man who had no arms and legs. And we'll be right back to cover it.

Betsy Gray: Well, I was so blessed, by changing my whole, MO when I was having fundraisers from, from asking the wrong question, I started asking the right question, and that was, who do you want God to speak? And that's how I ended up meeting Nick. And our clinic prospered so incredibly, that we were now a, couple million in the bank. And I realized that my small local bank, it was a community bank actually, philanthropically, was supporting the largest abortion industry. And now that we were really had, a huge deposit, we, were inadvertently killing children by banking with this bank. And so, I told my board treasurer that he had to go find, a bank that didn't. And then we were going to move. But there was not a single bank in Santa Barbara that did not support the abortion industry.
Kevin Freeman: Okay, I want to jump in. Marnie, this is it. If you're not faithful with your unrighteous mammon, if your money is being used against your values, that's what we talk about all the time.

Betsy says the Lord told her to start a Pro Life bank

Betsy Gray: Right, Right. And so I was in my prayer closet, and I'm like, Lord, we have to bank. I mean, we have to bank. What do we do? And I knew his voice. He taught me that years before. And he said to me, start my bank. Start Pro Life Bank. He even told me the name. And so I got up and I bought the URL and I said, yes. Clueless. Never had any, experience, but I knew that, you know, God qualifies you. You don't have to be qualified. And if it's his plan, he'll get it done.
Marnie Freeman: That's right.
Kevin Freeman: Well, you asked, Nick Vujicic at that point, hey, Nick, you just spoke for me. You're a great Pro Life spokesperson. Because if you ever thought, well, I'll just abort, because my baby might not have, you know, this issue or that issue. Nick born without arms and legs, and yet he's changing the world.
Marnie Freeman: I think it went more like she kept hounding him. I feel like the Lord's telling me this. I feel like the Lord's telling me this, that we need to do this together. We need to open this, Pro Life Bank. And just. It went on for a while, and I think he kind of relented after something happened. What happened?
Betsy Gray: Well, that was really fun. So, yes, we had been friends for four years, and then the Lord asked me to start this bank. And I called a few of my friends, Nick being one of them. And he always had the. He always had such insight and such wisdom and so many good ideas. I said and I prayed and I said, you know, Nick, you need to be my co founder. And he laughed at me. So you're right, Marnie. he said, you know, obviously, I have no interest in starting a bank. I'm too busy. So God's going to have to tell me, not you. And I knew when God was in control that he was I said, fine, yes, sir. And so, three months, he's like, so don't talk to me about it or email me or text or anything. So in that three month period, this is back in 2019, he gets a call from his CPA that says, hey, none of your cards are working. What's going on? And his national bank wrote him a letter and said, we looked into who you are. We want nothing to do with you. You have 30 days to get all your money out of this.
Kevin Freeman: How in the world could a bank look at Nick Vujicic, who gives his life for the gospel, who shares the love of Christ wherever he goes? How could they ever decide we don't want to? I mean, they should be calling him and saying, we want to serve you so well that you should be our spokesperson because he's so well spoken. They did the opposite. That's demonic. If you're going to cancel debank, Nick
Marnie Freeman: Vujicic, they canceled him because of his values, his Christian biblical values. And to cancel someone that is so prolific, a worldwide speaker, billions of followers, it's insane. It is, it was demonic.
Kevin Freeman: It's a demonic agenda. And so what did that say to Nick? Betsy.
Betsy Gray: So Nick calls me up and said, so, Betsy, this is what happened. And the Lord said to me, nick, now are you ready to start my bank with Betsy? And he said, yes, sir.
Kevin Freeman: I love how, God, I love it when a plan comes together. And here's the amazing thing. That's about the time shortly after that, that we've got to know Nick. And that's about the time, not long after that, that I asked him to write the forward for Pirate Money, which has an entire chapter on debanking. And what happens if a bank decides they don't like you because you are a Christian?
Marnie Freeman: I think he's one of the main faces of debanking.
Kevin Freeman: He absolutely is. I think he was one of the first.
Betsy Gray: Yes, now it's a thing. But it wasn't a thing when it happened to him.
Kevin Freeman: In fact, when President Trump mentioned debanking because he got debanked too, they laughed at him, they made fun of him on Saturday Night Live and said, it's not a real deal, but it is a real deal.

And the second challenge is if you know someone who is interested in partnering, should they be working with. With something like a Pro Life Bank?

Kevin Freeman: And, Marnie, you and I have these kitchen table talks. Ah, about what we need to be doing, bottom line, for our family. what could people do from your perspective? What should they hearing the Life I Didn't Plan and the God who Never Left by Betsy Gray. What is the takeaway to do this week?
Marnie Freeman: Well, I would say go back and look at all the stepping stones, the milestones that God has worked out in your life, including when you weren't walking with God. you can see the little miracles, which is what happens in her book. And also just leaning into the shepherd every day, eating his word, feasting on him, time with him. And also when you're going to your money, time to move your money. And I'd ask Betsy, this is in regard to Helen. What does leaning into the shepherd look like when it is time to move your money?
Kevin Freeman: All right, before we get there, let's imagine you feel lost as a sheep and, maybe blind as a sheep. And you're out there and your m name might be Helen, but it might be Bill or Sam or Susan or Kevan or Marnie. Kevan or Marnie. And you're going to have to find out what it's like to lean on the shepherd not just with your money, but with your money too. Everything. So, Betsy, what's your response?
Betsy Gray: Well, it's really, a beautiful thing because in Malachi, God promises us it's the only thing our money is the one thing he says, test me in this. And, it all belongs to him. And when you honor him with your income, he opens the floodgates. And I know that, a lot of people sometimes they look at and because it's true, I mean, we need interest, we need our money to work for us. but really just being at peace with good stewardship, I think, because God is who the real honoring, factor is here. If you honor God with your finances, he will honor you, good stewardship
Marnie Freeman: with time, family, all of it. Money.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, and we talk about money a lot because Jesus talked about it. Luke 16:11 says the same message of Malachi, which is, if you're not faithful with your unrighteous mammon, no one will trust you with true riches.
Marnie Freeman: Right.
Kevin Freeman: It also says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Also, will we deal honestly with honest weights and measures are, ah, we supposed.

Betsy Gray: Well, I think it's just so important, like Marnie was saying, to be with him, and to read his Word every single day. A dusty Bible is a dirty life, you know, so you really do need to spend time with him. honor your family. Family is so important. Honor your children and your husband and your wife, and it all will, shepherd will guide you.

Marnie Freeman: It is an easy read. It's just. I found it very profound. It affected me deeply. And partly because I see myself in those stories where God literally. And there's one thing where she's protected physically several times. And I find that in my life, even on mission trips where I was protected physically, like evil, people literally disappeared in front of my face when I called out to God. Those type of things, miracle after miracle, that I find to be very profound. Because God cares. He cares.
Kevin Freeman: He cares if you have a very specific need or a general need. And I'm just going to tease this again. The game show Miracle. When you get A financial update and you're short $4,863 and you win a prize for $4,863. Exactly. That is not a coincidence.
Marnie Freeman: That's a godsidence.

None of us have our lives planned, Marnie says

Marnie Freeman: Marnie, I said that just. You do not. None of us have our lives planned. The shepherd never left Betsy. He's never left us. And yet we have this roller coaster ride of a life none of it really planned out because we have to lean in and trust God. That's part of the deal.
Kevin Freeman: Just like the blind sheep Helen had to lean on and lean up against the shepherd to get where she was going. Sometimes you have to lean on a fellow sheep, and sometimes you have to lean on the shepherd. Never forget, never lose the voice of the good shepherd. And that is the lesson of the life I didn't plan and the God who never left. We cannot plan our lives. God is sovereign and many of the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the will of the Lord which shall be established. In addition to having you as co host, we've got a guest who did not set out to write a theology book, so she set out to survive. And here is the Pirate Money connection. Before we even get into the bank or anything else, the same man who wrote the forward for her book wrote the forward of Pirate Money. And he is our good friend, Nick Vujicic. And I don't think that's a coincidence.
Marnie Freeman: I don't think it's a coincidence. And I love him. When God is writing both stories, he tends to tie the money and the mission together.

Kevin Freeman: And our guest is Betsy Gray, the author of the Life I Didn't Plan and the God who Never Left. What a title.
Marnie Freeman: I know.
Kevin Freeman: She's a shepherd, a clinic director, an artist, a co founder with Nick Vujicic of Pro Life Financial. welcome aboard.
Marnie Freeman: Betsy Gray, welcome.
Betsy Gray: Hi. Hi. Kevan and Marnie, this is just such an honor to be here. Thank you so much for having me.
Marnie Freeman: We love it. We love Betsy. We've known her for a while now, and I mean, she is full of miracles and wisdom.
Kevin Freeman: Every time she comes out to Liberty Hawk, every time we see her at a conference, it lights up. She just lights up. She's so bright as a personality, it lights up the world.
Betsy says becoming a shepherd changed how she heard Jesus
Betsy, start with us in Montana. You have got two bum lambs. Explain what that means. And why did becoming a shepherd change how you hear Jesus from Jon 10?
Betsy Gray: Well, I ended up on a ranch in Montana and we had no animals. We went to church one Sunday and a dear rancher lady asked me if I wanted a couple of bum lambs. And, she explained that when a ewe has three lambs or triplets, they reject one of them. So you have these orphans, they call them bum lambs. And she said you have a Couple Kids, Great4H Project. So I thought, sure. So I end up with these, two bum lambs. And they bottle feed every hour. But Never at the same time. but the word got out really fast that we took orphans. And I literally ended up, with not only lambs, but horses and chickens and geese and cats and dogs. so I have these beautiful little bum lambs. And. And then at the same time, because God is so amazing, I actually, had considered myself a Christian for 20 years. I never went to church. You know, I was a creaser. I went in Christmas and Easter. I've never heard that.
Kevin Freeman: Creaster. All right.
Betsy Gray: And, you know, I never read my Bible either. But if you would ask me if I was a Christian, I would have said absolutely. and so I'm at this new little church and these ladies invite me to a Bible study. And, I'm 40 years old now, and no one had ever invited me to a Bible study in all my years of going to church. And, you know, and I did go more than just on Christmas.
Kevin Freeman: Okay, so let me just get this straight. You're there, you go to church, and somebody at church says, would you take two bum lambs? And you're now a shepherd and you're in Montana.
Marnie Freeman: One of them was Helen, right? Or was that Lucy? And Helen trusted you with her life, literally.
Betsy Gray: So what I was getting at with is that this church I got to know, I moved from religion to. At the same time I got my bum lambs, I moved from religion to a relationship. I actually met Jesus Christ the shepherd. And so at that same time, he starts teaching me about himself through my sheep.
Marnie Freeman: Amazing.
On Mother's day weekend in 2002, your mom is dying in Oregon
Well, then I'm going to switch to. On Mother's day weekend in 2002, you are in Montana, your mom is dying in Bend, Oregon, and a tractor pulls out in front of you. You shout for a police escort, you need help, and one of the police is throwing his leg over a motorcycle. And you are in a panic to try to get to be with your mom.
Kevin Freeman: This sounds like something straight from a movie trailer.
Marnie Freeman: I mean, every. In her book, every thing, every story sounds like a movie story. And it's really impactful.
Kevin Freeman: So tell that.
Betsy Gray: Well, it was so hard because when the doctor called me, he said, you don't have much time. Well, at that time, it was a 10 hour trip. It took two airplanes and it was 10 hours. No matter. That's as fast as you could do it. And my flight took off in an hour, but it took me, more than an hour to get to the airport. So we're driving like mad, and this tractor makes us go even slower because it's blind curves. You can't pass the tractor. So when we finally get on this highway with all these cars, and I did. I screamed, lord, we've got to have a police escort. And literally right then I looked up and a motorcycle cop was on the side of the road getting back on his bike. And we pulled over. I tumbled out of the car, ran up to him, screamed out my mess and how much we needed to escort. He actually let us. He said, follow me. And when he pulled out at, the next intersection, two more police cars pulled out. And then one more motorcycle pulled out. Cars were parting like the Red Sea. And it was the next year after 9 11.
Kevin Freeman: How long had you been a Christian at that point? How long had you really had a relationship?
Betsy Gray: at that point, that was 2002, and I had become relation. I became a Christian knowing Jesus in 1992.
Kevin Freeman: Okay, so you're 10 years in, you've been shepherding lambs, and all of a sudden you find out about your mom and you're like, I gotta get there. And you beg God for police escort. And lo and behold, he provides one.
Marnie Freeman: I mean, all the way up to the door of the airport, which you can't do.
Betsy Gray: It had just been 9 11. So there's all this cement and security, and I'm just going, oh my gosh, there's no way. And not only did we pull right up where we weren't supposed to pull up, but they. There was a cop waiting for me. And then he grabbed my arm and dragged me all the way. We ran across the tarmac right up to the plane.
Marnie Freeman: Oh my God.
Betsy Gray: And we got to the top and turned into the aisle, and the whole plane started applauding. And they had littered. The airline had waited for us.
Marnie Freeman: Amazing. Amazing.
Kevin Freeman: That's God. That is not a normal airline experience.
Marnie Freeman: And that's only one of the. One of the miracles.
We'll talk with Betsy Gray about her new book, The Life I Didn't Plan
In her book. So Nick writes that you still press your neck against the shepherd's leg. So what does that mean or look like on an ordinary Tuesday, when you're pressing your neck? yeah, on the shepherd's leg. So just tell us about that.
Betsy Gray: Well, the most beautiful part of knowing your shepherd as a shepherd, like when he teaches us that in Jon, we read it. And if you haven't had sheep, you don't realize how dependent they truly are. And so the beautiful thing thing is the sheep don't have to know where they're going. They totally depend on the shepherd. So on any given Tuesday or any other day, just having that peace and that knowledge that if you're seeking him with all your heart, his promise is to direct your path. So, you just lean hard.
Kevin Freeman: I've never connected. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will direct your path. Connected that with the shepherd until now, I never connected. That's what sheep have to do.
Marnie Freeman: Well, part of that is that Helen, her sheep, Bum Sheep, was, Bum Lamb, was pressing her neck to follow Betsy. And I think she may talk about that further in the show, but.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, yeah, so. So the whole notion of following God, you have to be right there, right up next to Him, Is that what you're saying?
Marnie Freeman: Yeah.
Betsy Gray: well, when you. Yeah, you need to lean on him, you need to realize that he's there for you.
Marnie Freeman: That's your direction, that's your peace, that's your trust. And it is literally blind faith.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, well, that's the whole book in one picture. The Life I didn't plan and the God who never left. That's a sheep talking to the shepherd.
Marnie Freeman: Right.
Kevin Freeman: Because the sheep doesn't plan their life. And the only way the sheep is in trouble is when it's separated from the shepherd.
Marnie Freeman: Right? Yeah, we need that. We need our shepherd.
Kevin Freeman: So. You've led an incredible life. I've read this book, and you're so full of life. You've got a full life ahead of you. That's the exciting thing about you, Betsy. You've led an incredible life and you've got a full life ahead of you. It's wonderful, just learning about all that you're doing. And it's an amazing book, with a Ford, you know, again, I can't get over it. The Ford is by Nick Vujicic. Same guy that wrote my Ford. A guy born without arms or legs. And he trusts the shepherd in the exact same way. Betsy Gray: I know, I want to.
Marnie Freeman: You named, a cormo bum lamb, Helen, after Helen Keller, which is really appropriate. She learned the ranch by bumping into your leg. So how is that different from the slogan, just have more faith or, yeah, you can explain all that. I love Ellen Keller, and you go for it.
Betsy Gray: Okay, yeah, well, different than that slogan because, faith is everything. and the blind part of this faith was so amazing for me. when I found out Helen was blind, I took her and carried her everywhere. But, you know, they grow pretty fast. So I put her down next to my leg when she was a couple, couple, you know, 24 inches tall, and took her neck and bumped it into my leg as I took a step, and just two or three steps, she caught on and she was able to bump into me. And we navigated the whole ranch that way as she grew up, just so she could bump me a little bit. We went everywhere together. Well, but then, you know, like, everything. She wanted to, immigrate into the, flock when she. When she got. When she grew up. And she even had lambs of her own, you know, until one day, you guys, I heard this screaming. I mean, she was there was bleeding so loud, I thought there was a wolf. I ran to the window, and something had. Had spooked the flock and they had run away. She's in this spinning in this little circle and I run outside and I whistle and she froze and I ran out to her and, and with exaggeration, she usually didn't do it this hard, but she just, I got up next to her and she threw her head against my hip and leaned really hard on me. Oh, she was so relieved her shepherd was there.
Marnie Freeman: That's a, that's so profound. She had. Because you wore her like a scarf when she was young. And as, she grew up, she came into basically her own faith. Leaned into your leg and she could navigate. And then when she didn't, when you weren't there, you came immediately. When you heard trouble, when she, you heard that she was in trouble, you were there. And talk about years later, when you actually had to leave them. You had to leave three sheep and, you know, circumstances of your life, you had to give them back. So you gave her to a rancher and you went to go see your sheep two years later. And what happened?
Betsy Gray: Well, if you wouldn't mind, I just wanted to tell you at that moment of her leaning hard on me, that's when Jesus spoke to me for the first time ever as a 40 year old.
Marnie Freeman: Oh, wow.
Betsy Gray: And that's when he said to me, trust in me with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. And that's when I realized, you guys, I'm the shepherd. Helen is blind. She knows that I'm going to take her where she should go. And that's exactly what Jesus wants us to do. And so that was the profound moment that I wanted to talk about. Then I had to say goodbye to my beautiful sheep. Now they only live to be, you know, 10 or 12, so they were almost, ah, that age. And I had to sell my whole flock to market. But not, not Helen and Lucy and Lisa, my two original ones. So two years later, this rancher agreed. Okay, I'll let them live their life out. Two years went by, never saw them again. But different business took me out there. And at the end of the business I said to, the rancher, so how did my sheep do? Because I figured they were gone. And he said, well, Lucy and Helen are out back. You will see them.
Kevin Freeman: All right, Betsy, we're going to have to take a break. Wow, this is a great story. And you're going to have to hang on till you find out what happened with Helen and Lucy when the shepherd came back to see them. We'll be right back.

Kevin Freeman: Betsy Gray left us on a cliffhanger with her book
Welcome back with your host, Kevan Freeman.
Kevin Freeman: And I'm joined by Marnie Freeman. Marnie and I are talking to one of our favorite people, Betsy Gray, the author of the Life I Didn't Plan and the God who Never Left. And, Betsy, you left us on a cliffhanger. You had to sell your flock. You know, and I'm picturing Marty, I'm picturing sheep Detective a little bit here in the movie that was out there. I'm picturing that a little bit. But you've had to leave your flock, sell them, and then you come back and somebody that you didn't sell them to, that's a new business. And now it's years later, and you're coming back and you're saying, hey, I wonder what happened to. And, it's Helen and Lucy, right? Pick up the story where we left off.
Betsy Gray: And so Helen and Lucy are out back. I run outside, and the rancher points to a hillside. Well, he's got about 75 sheep. All their heads are down. They're all grazing. I couldn't see my two sheep. So just for kicks, I whistled my shepherd whistle. And immediately, only two heads popped up. And then they turned and they ran down that hillside. They had to run all the way across a pasture and over a bridge and through the corral. The whole time, Helen's, you know, little bumping into two to, Lucy. And they get all the way up to me, and I'm rubbing their little heads and I'm calling them by name. And right then, Jesus spoke to me again, and he said, my sheep know my voice, and I know them by name.
Kevin Freeman: Amen.
Betsy Gray: And he was telling me then, betsy, I know your name, and you can hear my voice.
Kevin Freeman: But notice there, the dependence. Sometime we depend on other people who are believers. We depend on the Lord. But to get to you, Lucy needed to help guide Helen to get to you, because Helen was blind, couldn't see. And so when they both heard your voice, they both responded. But we are to bear one another's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ. So there's another biblical. I mean, your book is so filled with biblical truth, but it's applied. And it reminds me of those, amazing books where you've got somebody telling their life story and you see God throughout the book, but not visually. You see him. You just know the hand of God is there. And that's what this book reminds me of.
Marnie Freeman: This book has so many Miracles. It's divided chapter by chapter, miracle by miracle. And it's really impactful. And I have a kinship with her in that we started out rebellious, and God called us. We came to know and hear his voice, and we finally repented of our ways. And I, think one big thing is that we did not know you needed to. When we first came to Christ. And the book talks about this is we did not know we needed to feast on the Word to grow. We did not know we need to put on spirit, spiritual armor. We did not know we entered a spiritual battlefield, and discipleship, hence, is so important. And she didn't have it, and I really didn't have it much. And so, therefore, after receiving Christ, we went off on our own ways and did our own thing.
Kevin Freeman: But this book ministered to you.
Marnie Freeman: Yes, it did, because it showed you
Kevin Freeman: the path back even when you were blind and how you could hear the shepherd's voice and how you could.
Marnie Freeman: He never left. Really.
Kevin Freeman: He never left. And you could depend on another believer who would walk alongside you, because two are better than one, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Betsy, it's a great story. Any other thoughts you want to share from the life that you hadn't planned?
Betsy Gray: Well, the objective of sharing all these stories and my shepherd showed up so miraculously throughout my life, is to encourage and inspire the people that read this book. How wonderful it is to walk with Jesus every day, to spend time with him every single day in his word, you and him, and there's nothing else like it. It'll change your life.
You left Montana for Santa Barbara to lead a pro life clinic
Kevin Freeman: All right, now I want to fast forward from here to another miracle that we'll carry over on the break, which is an amazing story of how God called you in to be pro life into the clinic, into the fundraising associated with all that. There's a whole other miracle story. You're gonna reset, and you're all of a sudden, you're gonna be in Santa Barbara. Isn't that where you were? Santa Barbara?
Betsy Gray: Yes. I left Montana for Santa Barbara.
Kevin Freeman: And in Santa Barbara, you find yourself now leading a pro life clinic. And you're helping people, people deal with life. There's an amazing story that you're going to hear when we come back from the break about how God intersected this woman who cared for a blind lamb with a man who had no arms and legs. Betsy Gray: Well, I was so blessed, by changing my whole, MO when I was having fundraisers from, from asking the wrong question, I started asking the right question, and that was, who do you want God to speak? And that's how I ended up meeting Nick. And our clinic prospered so incredibly, that we were now a, couple million in the bank. And I realized that my small local bank, it was a community bank actually, philanthropically, was supporting the largest abortion industry. And now that we were really had, a huge deposit, we, were inadvertently killing children by banking with this bank. And so, I told my board treasurer that he had to go find, a bank that didn't. And then we were going to move. But there was not a single bank in Santa Barbara that did not support the abortion industry.

Betsy says the Lord told her to start a Pro Life bank

We're responsible for our money. That's the point of this radio program. God made you a shepherd over your money. You're stirred, over. And, Betsy, you're running a Pro Life clinic. Betsy Gray: Right, Right. And so I was in my prayer closet, and I'm like, Lord, we have to bank. I mean, we have to bank. What do we do? And I knew his voice. He taught me that years before. And he said to me, start my bank. Start Pro Life Bank. He even told me the name. And so I got up and I bought the URL and I said, yes. Clueless. Never had any, experience, but I knew that, you know, God qualifies you. You don't have to be qualified. And if it's his plan, he'll get it done.
Marnie Freeman: That's right.
Kevin Freeman: Well, you asked, Nick Vujicic at that point, hey, Nick, you just spoke for me. You're a great Pro Life spokesperson. Because if you ever thought, well, I'll just abort, because my baby might not have, you know, this issue or that issue. Nick born without arms and legs, and yet he's changing the world.
Marnie Freeman: I think it went more like she kept hounding him. I feel like the Lord's telling me this. I feel like the Lord's telling me this, that we need to do this together. We need to open this, Pro Life Bank. And just. It went on for a while, and I think he kind of relented after something happened. What happened?
Betsy Gray: Well, that was really fun. So, yes, we had been friends for four years, and then the Lord asked me to start this bank. And I called a few of my friends, Nick being one of them. And he always had the. He always had such insight and such wisdom and so many good ideas. I said and I prayed and I said, you know, Nick, you need to be my co founder. And he laughed at me. So you're right, Marnie. he said, you know, obviously, I have no interest in starting a bank. I'm too busy. So God's going to have to tell me, not you. And I knew when God was in control that he was I said, fine, yes, sir. And so, three months, he's like, so don't talk to me about it or email me or text or anything. So in that three month period, this is back in 2019, he gets a call from his CPA that says, hey, none of your cards are working. What's going on? And his national bank wrote him a letter and said, we looked into who you are. We want nothing to do with you. You have 30 days to get all your money out of this.
Kevin Freeman: How in the world could a bank look at Nick Vujicic, who gives his life for the gospel, who shares the love of Christ wherever he goes? How could they ever decide we don't want to? I mean, they should be calling him and saying, we want to serve you so well that you should be our spokesperson because he's so well spoken. They did the opposite. That's demonic. If you're going to cancel debank, Nick
Marnie Freeman: Vujicic, they canceled him because of his values, his Christian biblical values. And to cancel someone that is so prolific, a worldwide speaker, billions of followers, it's insane. It is, it was demonic.
Kevin Freeman: It's a demonic agenda. And so what did that say to Nick? Betsy.
Betsy Gray: So Nick calls me up and said, so, Betsy, this is what happened. And the Lord said to me, nick, now are you ready to start my bank with Betsy? And he said, yes, sir.
Kevin Freeman: I love how, God, I love it when a plan comes together. And here's the amazing thing. That's about the time shortly after that, that we've got to know Nick. And that's about the time, not long after that, that I asked him to write the forward for Pirate Money, which has an entire chapter on debanking. And what happens if a bank decides they don't like you because you are a Christian?
Marnie Freeman: I think he's one of the main faces of debanking.
Kevin Freeman: He absolutely is. I think he was one of the first.
Betsy Gray: Yes, now it's a thing. But it wasn't a thing when it happened to him.
Kevin Freeman: In fact, when President Trump mentioned debanking because he got debanked too, they laughed at him, they made fun of him on Saturday Night Live and said, it's not a real deal, but it is a real deal.

Marnie Freeman: Well, I would say go back and look at all the stepping stones, the milestones that God has worked out in your life, including when you weren't walking with God. you can see the little miracles, which is what happens in her book. And also just leaning into the shepherd every day, eating his word, feasting on him, time with him. And also when you're going to your money, time to move your money. And I'd ask Betsy, this is in regard to Helen. What does leaning into the shepherd look like when it is time to move your money?
Kevin Freeman: All right, before we get there, let's imagine you feel lost as a sheep and, maybe blind as a sheep. And you're out there and your m name might be Helen, but it might be Bill or Sam or Susan or Kevan or Marnie. Kevan or Marnie. And you're going to have to find out what it's like to lean on the shepherd not just with your money, but with your money too. Everything. So, Betsy, what's your response?
Betsy Gray: Well, it's really, a beautiful thing because in Malachi, God promises us it's the only thing our money is the one thing he says, test me in this. And, it all belongs to him. And when you honor him with your income, he opens the floodgates. And I know that, a lot of people sometimes they look at and because it's true, I mean, we need interest, we need our money to work for us. but really just being at peace with good stewardship, I think, because God is who the real honoring, factor is here. If you honor God with your finances, he will honor you, good stewardship
Marnie Freeman: with time, family, all of it. Money.
Kevin Freeman: Yeah, and we talk about money a lot because Jesus talked about it. Luke 16:11 says the same message of Malachi, which is, if you're not faithful with your unrighteous mammon, no one will trust you with true riches.
Marnie Freeman: Right.
Kevin Freeman: It also says, where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Also, will we deal honestly with honest weights and measures are, ah, we supposed.
Make sure where you're putting your money is aligned with your values

Betsy Gray: Well, I think it's just so important, like Marnie was saying, to be with him, and to read his Word every single day. A dusty Bible is a dirty life, you know, so you really do need to spend time with him. honor your family. Family is so important. Honor your children and your husband and your wife, and it all will, shepherd will guide you.

Betsy Gray: And you guys. I was invited to a book club and, for a book of the month. And I have to tell everyone. I call it the book of the weekend. Because it's really short and an easy read.
Marnie Freeman: It is an easy read. It's just. I found it very profound. It affected me deeply. And partly because I see myself in those stories where God literally. And there's one thing where she's protected physically several times. And I find that in my life, even on mission trips where I was protected physically, like evil, people literally disappeared in front of my face when I called out to God. Those type of things, miracle after miracle, that I find to be very profound. Because God cares. He cares.
Kevin Freeman: He cares if you have a very specific need or a general need. And I'm just going to tease this again. The game show Miracle. When you get A financial update and you're short $4,863 and you win a prize for $4,863. Exactly. That is not a coincidence.
Marnie Freeman: That's a godsidence.
Kevin Freeman: That is a godsidence and how God did all of these amazing things. Betsy, thank you for sharing so much of truth and miracles and joy. It is a fun, easy read. Marnie Freeman: Marnie, I said that just. You do not. None of us have our lives planned. The shepherd never left Betsy. He's never left us. And yet we have this roller coaster ride of a life none of it really planned out because we have to lean in and trust God. That's part of the deal.
Kevin Freeman: Just like the blind sheep Helen had to lean on and lean up against the shepherd to get where she was going. Sometimes you have to lean on a fellow sheep, and sometimes you have to lean on the shepherd. Never forget, never lose the voice of the good shepherd. And that is the lesson of the life I didn't plan and the God who never left. We cannot plan our lives. God is sovereign and many of the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the will of the Lord which shall be established. The scriptures teach this, and that is written out in a beautiful true allegory. True allegory, true story right here. that you can learn about the

Teach us to stop asking only what we can do and to start asking what you want.
